Whale & Dolphin Watching

Timor Leste has strategic location with deep water where the whales are migrating through Wetar Strait along the north coast of the country. With resident dolphins and smaller whales living in the country's rich water, they greet us often in the ocean!

Overview

The changing seasons drive marine mammals, particularly the large baleen whales such as humpback whales, to migrate between their feeding and breeding grounds*. Dolphins tend to stay in a home range year round. The same as smaller whales such as short-finned Pilot and Melon-headed whales.

(*IFAW 2007)

Migratory season is from October to December.

The Baleen Whales visible in the region are Blue Whale, Sperm Whale, Humpback Whale, Cuvier’s Beaked Whale, Killer Whale, Short-finned Pilot Whale, False Killer Whale, Melon-headed whale.
